STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF MISSION
Ideas and innovation drive the knowledge-based economy of the 21st century, thereby fueling discoveries in science and technology and their applications that can benefit society. The immediate challenges are to find ways to transform research breakthroughs in fields such as genomics, proteomics, bioengineering, and information technology, into useful new products, improved crops, and services to benefit society. Challenges include:
- Promoting collaborative research and education with the goal of developing new technologies to address societal issues related to food, health and the environment.
- Supporting the planning and development of research and educational facilities designed to provide the necessary collaborative infrastructure to facilitate scientific breakthroughs in the life sciences.
- Raising public awareness of urgent societal issues related to food, health and the environment that must be addressed through research and development in the life sciences.
