MISSION

Advance life sciences research and outreach for the sustainable production of food, the improvement of human nutrition, health and well-being, and the protection of the environment and biodiversity.

STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF MISSION

There is an urgent global need to increase food production in a sustainable way because the world’s population is projected to increase by 2 billion by 2050. Regionally, this need will be even more challenging because global warming will bring more droughts and increased salt water intrusion into vulnerable crop lands. To avoid increased pressure on wildlife habitat and biodiversity, this increase in productivity must occur largely on land that is currently used for agriculture.

Modern technology, correctly harnessed, can provide solutions for improving world food security. These solutions should emphasize increasing food production in a sustainable way that conserves soil, water, natural resources & biodiversity. Achieving this outcome will require a long-term commitment to research, development, and outreach worldwide, and new collaborations will have to be forged between the public and private sectors.
